Departments

The School of Technology and Management (ESTiG) comprises 9 departments, which are scientific-pedagogical bodies dedicated to teaching, research and development activities, as well as service provision.

The Departments are organised into a Department Council, composed of all lecturers of the Department, and a Scientific Committee, composed of all full-time career academic staff, as well as lecturers holding a PhD with at least one year of service at the School/IPB.

Each Department is responsible, within its own areas and without prejudice to coordination with other Departments:

  1. Promoting the production, development and dissemination of knowledge in its respective areas;
  2. To carry out the teaching activities inherent to the course units assigned to it;
  3. To collaborate with the various School bodies in proposing policies to be followed in the scientific and pedagogical domains;
  4. To propose to the different School bodies policies to be pursued in the areas of postgraduate and continuing education, research, cultural extension and service provision to the community;
  5. To participate in the preparation of proposals for the creation, restructuring and discontinuation of training programmes within its scope of activity and/or to collaborate in the development of study plans for courses within other Departments;
  6. To promote and support the development of applied research projects in its respective fields and in interdisciplinary programmes;
  7. To ensure the initiative and freedom of research of its academic staff and to establish research lines aimed at the development of knowledge and the quality of teaching, in accordance with the principles and objectives of the School and IPB.

The Scientific Committee of the Department is responsible for:

  1. Defining the general policy of the Department in scientific and pedagogical matters;
  2. Submitting proposals for the creation, restructuring and discontinuation of initial training programmes within the scientific areas of competence of the Department;
  3. Submitting proposals for the creation, restructuring and discontinuation of postgraduate programmes and other training activities within the scientific areas of competence of the Department;
  4. Defining and proposing to the competent bodies the actions necessary for the implementation, development and evaluation of the programmes under its responsibility;
  5. Defining and proposing to the School’s Technical-Scientific Council the criteria for the allocation of teaching duties and the organisation of the academic calendar within its area of activity;
  6. Defining the staffing needs for academic staff within its area of activity;
  7. Issuing an opinion on requests for equivalence to scholarship holder status and for exemption from duties by academic staff serving in the Department;
  8. To propose to the School’s Technical-Scientific Council the recruitment and reappointment of academic staff;
  9. To approve and propose to the competent bodies guidelines on the policy for the acquisition of scientific and pedagogical materials;
  10. To submit to the competent bodies proposals for protocols, agreements and research and service provision contracts between the Department and public or private entities;
  11. To issue an opinion on the integration or participation of academic staff of the respective Department in institutes, centres or research groups external to the Department.
