IPB organises numerous events with the aim of showcasing the institution, promoting its educational offer and its scientific activity.
By opening its doors, IPB facilitates contact with the reality of Higher Education and Applied Research, offering a variety of activities for different audiences, including demonstrations, laboratory visits and experimental activities.
See here some of our science events.
Masterclasses
The Masterclasses in Particle Physics are an activity organised by the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (lip.pt/masterclasses) in collaboration with participating institutes and universities, aimed at secondary school students, with the purpose of introducing the field of Particle Physics.
It is an international activity – physicsmasterclasses.org – under the framework of IPPOG – International Particle Physics Outreach Group.
Students visit institutes and universities to “Be a Scientist for a Day… With Hands on Particles!”, in around 200 locations across 60 countries.
The intensive programme allows young participants to experience the typical cycle of a scientist’s activity: learning, experimentation, discussion and presentation of results (and, at the end, self-assessment).
Fascination of Plants Day
Promoted by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO), this initiative aims to engage as many people as possible worldwide in discovering the fascination of plants and the importance of their study in improving agriculture and sustainable food production, as well as horticulture, forestry and the production of non-food goods such as paper, wood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy. The key role of plants in environmental conservation is also highlighted. IPB promotes the distribution of plants to students from different levels of education and to the general public (produced in ESA greenhouses), in public spaces in the cities of Bragança and Mirandela, alongside awareness and recreational activities (games, painting, music).
Open Day
Activities take place in two periods (morning and afternoon). However, participants are asked to select the sets of activities they wish to attend, with IPB reserving the right to make adjustments deemed necessary for the proper organisation of the programme.
Lunch may be booked at the Social Services Canteen and is offered by IPB. Therefore, if participants wish to have lunch, they should indicate this option during registration.
Summer Science
Summer internships of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança aimed at providing students from Technical-Vocational education, Luso-descendant students and international students from Secondary and Technical-Vocational education with an opportunity to experience the reality of technological and professionally oriented research activities in Portugal. Secondary school students with an interest in a technological, applied and “hands-on” approach may also apply for these internships.
We offer the opportunity to attend internships in various technical-professional areas:
- Performing Arts, Fine Arts and Design;
- Engineering;
- Management and Accounting;
- Humanities, Secretariat and Languages;
- Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Informatics;
- Agricultural, Food and Environmental Technologies;
- Health and Sports Technologies.
Ciência Viva in the Laboratory
The programme “Ciência Viva in the Laboratory – Scientific Occupation of Young People During Holidays”, financially supported by the Ciência Viva Agency, aims to provide secondary school students with an opportunity to engage with the reality of scientific and technological research.
The internships promoted under Ciência Viva in the Laboratory take place in a real research environment, within the R&D centres of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, with activities as close as possible to scientific research, using clear language and content adapted to the participants’ age.
Aqua Summer School
The Aqua Summer School takes place within the framework of the Blue Design Alliance, focusing on the valorisation of water, ocean and river resources, and social and environmental sustainability, associated with health and well-being through design. It aims to be a privileged space for learning and disseminating knowledge related to water for secondary school students. At the same time, it develops skills such as autonomy, creativity and teamwork through pedagogical, recreational and cultural practices. The Aqua Summer School takes place in the city of Chaves, known for its thermal waters, allowing young participants to discover the city and its cultural, economic and leisure potential. The programme covers different scientific areas related to water, promoting non-formal education and experimental activities, guided by researchers and mentors, in classical chemistry, microbiology, heavy metals and all possibilities of scientific research linked to thermal water. By attending the Aqua Summer School, participants use their free time in a meaningful and enjoyable way—while discovering a new city and making new friends, they engage in an enriching experience both scientifically and personally, potentially discovering their future vocation.
