European Charter for Researchers

European Charter for Researchers

The European Charter for Researchers is a set of general principles and requirements that specify the roles, responsibilities and rights of researchers, as well as those of employers and/or funders of researchers. The aim of the Charter is to ensure that the nature of the relationship between researchers and employers or funders is conducive to successful performance in the generation, transfer, sharing and dissemination of knowledge and technological development, and to the career development of researchers.

The Charter also recognises the value of all forms of mobility as a means of enhancing researchers’ professional development. In this sense, the Charter provides a framework for researchers, employers and funders, inviting them to act responsibly and as professionals within their working environment, and to recognise each other as such.

This Charter is addressed to all researchers in the European Union at all stages of their careers and covers all fields of research in both the public and private sectors, regardless of the nature of their appointment or employment, the legal status of their employer or the type of organisation or establishment in which the work is carried out. It takes into account the multiple roles of researchers, who are called upon not only to carry out research and/or development activities, but also to be involved in supervision, mentoring, management or administrative tasks.

As for the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, it consists of a set of principles that ensure respect for values such as transparency in recruitment and the fair treatment of all candidates, among others, “particularly with regard to the development of an attractive, open and sustainable European labour market for researchers, complementing those set out in the European Charter for Researchers”.

IPB and all those who are part of the IPB research ecosystem (research centres and units, associated laboratory, collaborative laboratories and research groups) have adhered to the principles of the European Charter for Researchers. Recruitment processes for research staff follow the recommendations set out in the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.
