OERN and the European Parliament - World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

The School of Technology and Management (ESTiG) hosted, on March 6, 2026, at the Eng. Alcínio Miguel Auditorium, an event dedicated to the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, organized by the Northern Region of the Portuguese Engineers Association in partnership with the European Parliament Liaison Office.

The initiative aimed to celebrate this international day while also marking four decades since Portugal’s accession to the European Union. The event featured a panel of distinguished speakers who discussed the evolution of engineering in Portugal before and after EU accession (1986–2026), highlighting the key role of engineering in promoting sustainable development.

The event brought together several notable figures from engineering, academia, and public institutions, including Eng. Bento Aires, President of the Engineers Association – Northern Region; Eng. Humberto Varum, President of the Civil Engineering Specialty Council; Eng. Cristina Reis, professor at UTAD; Eng. José Pimenta Machado, President of the Portuguese Environment Agency; Dr. Emídio Sousa, Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities; representatives of the European Parliament; and the Mayor of Bragança, Dr. Isabel Ferreira.

This event reinforces the role of ESTiG and IPB in promoting scientific and institutional debate on the major challenges of engineering and sustainable development, strengthening collaboration between academia, public institutions, and society.
